Online classified safety tips for sellers

Seller-side habits: do not hold items for strangers, do not share OTPs, and meet where other people can see you.

Sellers get robbed of time more often than of goods: endless ‘is this available?’ with no meetup, or a buyer who only wants your number. Protect your schedule as well as the item.

Do not hold without a viewing

If someone cannot meet, the item stays listed. Deposits to a personal account to ‘hold’ a sofa are how people lose both the sofa and the cash.

Never share OTPs or remote-access apps

Nobody buying your lamp needs to log into your email. Anyone who asks is not a buyer.

Your home

For large furniture, it is reasonable to have someone else in the house and to meet at the door. You can also offer a nearby public loading bay.

How to sell used items quickly

Speed on classifieds comes from photos, a realistic price, and a meetup window — not from posting the same ad ten times.
